Favorite Things: Spring Edition!

24 Apr

In keeping with my sporadic blogging of late, I just wanted to pop in and share a few of my favorite things right now. This may be short, but I assure you, all five things are super sweet!

1.) This “French Country Writing Desk” from Belle Escape.

It comes in a ton of colors and even though my husband loathes it, I love it enough to make up for his disdain. (Sorry for the odd picture format, I couldn’t get it to crop evenly).

2.) This gorgeous slab I saw last week when doing some granite selection with a client.

Well, actually, it’s two slabs. See the reflection of the man for scale – they’re huge! I wish I remembered the name of the stone but all I can recall is the word “azure.”

3.) Easter Eggs/Family Crafts

We did some family egg dyeing last weekend, and I thought I was very clever when I taped off an egg and made an abstract landscape:

Then I walked around the table to check on my husband, and he TOTALLY showed me up with his PAINTING of our cat. Unbelievable. But he is talented! Do I even need to mention that instead of using a regular, pedestrian hard-boiled egg like my son and I did, he drilled a hole into his and literally blew out all of the insides?…of course I don’t.

Here are the finished eggs:

4.) Graphic patterns with bold colors.

This is a detail from a restaurant in Chattanooga, Tennessee called Milk and Honey (their website sports the same colors. Excellent gelato.) Right up my alley! This has been a long lasting combo, and I hope it sticks around.

5.) This video, which creatively applies the aesthetic of filmmaker Wes Anderson to the classic, Forest Gump.

Spot on, perfection.

Hope you enjoy at least some of the same things! Have a great rest of the week!

Happy Birthday, Neuman!

23 May

Our sweet cat is 12 today.

Happy Birthday, Neuman!

He’s gentle and furry and smart and very large for a cat at 18.5 pounds. This is where my husband wants me to point out that he is not fat; he is just a big cat. Really, he is. Let’s call him “majestic.”

Happy Birthday, Neuman!

We made cupcakes in his likeness, because who am I to decline buying 6 kinds of candy in order to make a food creation that looks like a cat. His eyes are different colors (green and brown) because in real life they’re two different colors.

But before we made the cupcakes, I made a watercolor sketch of how I’d construct them. Because I do things like that.

Happy Birthday, Neuman!

They look pretty good, I think (despite having to forgo pretzel stick whiskers for blue-raspberry sour gummy whiskers…don’t ask).

Happy Birthday, Neuman!

Happy Birthday, Neuman!

Happy Birthday, Neuman! We love you very much!

Pet Decor At Its Best.

28 Dec

This adorable, cozy kitty sleeps in a bed that is much nicer than mine. (image via JunkCamp)

My husband and I always try to do special things for our cat, Neuman…especially during the holidays.  Last year “special things” came in the form of this awesome pet bed from Hepper:

Hepper Podium Pet Bed in Herringbone. (image via Hepper)

Herringbone exterior, Sherpa lining, sleek stainless legs….and he hated it.   Of course, I told the nice lady who purchased it from me on Craigslist that he loved it, so hopefully he is the lone exception in terms of his distaste for comfy and stylish lounging spots.

This year we stuck with toys and treats for our furry friend, but I am hoping to upgrade his scratching post to this one from ThinkGeek in the near future (it’s currently sold out):

If you're exclusively into Louis chairs and florals this might not be for you...but if you like retro graphics, get on the waitlist! (image via ThinkGeek)

Now if you are into more traditional spaces, or just really plush cat beds, check out this project from JunkCamp.  You, yes YOU, can make a true four-poster bed for your cat or small dog.  This is nothing short of amazing.

What a transformation! (images via Ohdeedoh, via JunkCamp)

..and THAT is how to spice up the decor in your pet’s life, as well as your own.
