Color Friday is: Teal!

22 Feb

I’m pretty convinced this is the *it* color right now. I have three clients who are using some variation of it on their walls, in their furnishings, and as vibrant accents throughout the home. It’s slowly becoming one of my favorites, too.

Here are some of my favorite teal picks – many of them are better deals than you might guess! Enjoy, and have a great weekend!

Beautiful Details.

8 Feb

My week has been filled with lots of little tiny perfect details.

For example, I visited a client this morning whom I have been working with on small projects for quite some time, and I just had to take a picture of the gorgeous architectural detailing in her Logan Circle row house.

This is the top of the beautiful built-in mirror above her mantle.

Beautiful Mantle

I don’t think I’d noticed until I looked at this photo that it has an “M” on it before! It’s very high up.

Here is another view of the whole thing. It makes me so happy.

Beautiful Mantle

Yesterday evening, when I was playing with my son, I decided to take on a quick but very gratifying 2-minute craft project. I found myself sitting on the floor with his (formerly mine) little tiny wooden rocking chair and a few rolls of washi tape. Wheels started spinning, and a few minutes later this is what I had:

Rocking Rocking Chair

I kind of love it. Such a small change and easy but it created a big impact.

And finally, this is the other small but uplifting detail that I’ve been coming into contact with daily – no, hourly…and sometimes every ten minutes. Cough drops.

Well Designed Cough Drops

Yes, they’re silly. But they truly do make me feel better in the midst of my constant winter cold.

So there you have it: a historical mantle, an old rocking chair, and some drugstore cough drops all have one magical thing in common: great details that are beautiful and inspiring.

Design really does make a difference, and often, it’s all in the details!

Color Friday is: Black!

18 Jan

I haven’t done one of these Color Fridays in a while. So I’ll ease back into it with an easy, looks-good-on-everything color: BLACK!

Beautiful Black Rooms

I know black can be pretty dramatic. Some people find it depressing or too dark or moody. But I LOVE it. I think it’s a happy medium between serious masculinity and glamorous femininity. Lots of clients are gravitating toward black floors and railings, which I think is extraordinarily beautiful…dusty and fingerprinty…but beautiful and worth it. I find black to be a wildly sophisticated and easy to work with color, so bring on the black!

Any of these items would be lovely in a room with equally dark walls, gallery whites, or pastel brights. One of the best things about black is its versatility. Not only does it pair well with almost everything, but it is just as at home with grandma’s antiques as it is with the acrylic ghost chair you ordered last week.

Using Vintage Kilims for Furniture.

17 Jan

I have several clients who like the look of well-loved, vibrantly muted, geometric kilims. I like them, too. Sometimes people use them on the floor as rugs, as they were originally intended to be used. Sometimes people hang them on the wall; a technique that is great for stairway walls, because they can take up a vast amount of  what is usually awkward space without overwhelming a room. But most of the time, I hunt down ottomans that have been upholstered in vintage kilims and we use them as soft coffee tables. You can definitely have your upholsterer make one of these for you, or, you can find scores of them (often at great prices) at retailers like West Elm, One Kings Lane, or Anthropologie.

Here are five great pieces – from pillows to poufs – all upholstered in vintage, authentic, kilims. Enjoy and follow through with the links if you’re interested in purchasing them – that one-of-a-kind One Kings Lane pillow (#1)  isn’t going to last long!

Color Friday is: Copper!

3 Nov

I love this time of year and all of the rusty shades of copper that are blowing in the trees. With the storm last week notwithstanding, the weather is crisp and the leaves are gorgeous. In fact, in DC, it’s almost impossible to tell we had any bad weather at all. That said, I’m hoping all my readers and clients who are negatively impacted by floods and storm damage and power outages recover quickly and fully.

Since this week’s thrown everyone for a loop, I’m bringing you Color Friday – Copper! – a day late this week. If you love this rustic shade as much as I do, check out an older round-up: there’s a lot of copper to go around! Enjoy, and stay warm!

Color Friday is: Red!

19 Oct

This week’s Color Friday – Red! –  is inspired by a few red things I’ve recently sourced for clients that are particularly fabulous. The glass pendant is one of my favorite recent finds; but I’ll give you  fair warning that it’s a light fixture on the pricier side, especially for its small stature!

Enjoy these fun red finds, and have a great weekend!  Mine is bookended with two school workdays and a sick husband, but thankfully I’m caught up on work and can relax for a few hours. Finally! Hope you’re up to something fun!

Color Friday is: Fall Leaves!

1 Oct

You guys. I’m the worst. I haven’t been blogging, I’m doing the Color Friday I promised on a Monday, and I made frozen pizza for dinner for my family several nights last week. (But I made a salad too, so it’s cool).

Things have been really busy. Lots of great clients, my little one is doing very well at preschool (but we’ve encountered our first fall illness this year – both of us), and my husband is working hard as usual. That said, it’s been a nice past few weeks and we’ve managed to spend time together and with family and friends, and that is what it’s all about.

Plus, IT’S HAPPENING. And by that, I mean the leaves are changing. We were sitting at a stoplight today and I had my car window open and a leaf just blew into my lap. Amazing! I just love this season.

So here is my Color…umm…Monday: Fall Leaves! You can also see the one I did last Fall, and the Fall before that.

Enjoy the colors, and have a great week!
