If graphic pops and quirky elements are your thing, consider numbering your stair risers.
All it requires is some paint, stencils, a steady hand…oh, and it’ll help if your stairs are hardwood (just a minor architectural detail).

I sort of LOVE this idea! We have steep narrow stairs so I think it would look cool! Now I just have to convince Travis to decarpet the stairs!
