Color Friday is: Crazy Colorful!

17 Feb

It’s hard for me not to do this post every week. And yet, when I do write this post it’s still hard. Not because finding gorgeous colorful things is difficult, but because my son is sitting by my side yelling things like “I WANT THAT ONE!” and “When I grow up I’m gonna be a chocolate maker and I’m gonna give everyone chocolate!” and “Can I have some chocolate now?” So there you go – everything featured on this week’s Color Friday passes the two year old seal of approval! I know I’m relieved.

As per usual, here are eight sort-of-for-the-home things that I’m sure you’ll adore. My personal favorites are the garland, Missoni rug, and of course the chocolates (I’m a sucker for variety packs).

From garland at top: Paper Garland, source unknown - let me know if you have it!; Liuwa Rug by Missoni (image via Missoni); Test Kitchen Measuring Cup from Mod Cloth, $15 (image via ModCloth); Dylan's Candy Bar Signature Chocolate Wheel, $42 (image via Dylan's Candy Bar), Art, also from an unknown source. I'm serious when I say my kid was distracting me this week! Help!; Multiplayer Wall Hook from Land of Nod, $15 (image via Land of Nod); Dot Matrix Rug from Land of Nod, $349 (image via Land of Nod); Grosgrain Rainbow Pillow from Dranesfield and Ross, (image via House Beautiful)

Enjoy your weekend, and if you find yourselves with some spare time and a significant abundance of Jell-o, you can find the recipe for those beautiful rainbow cups pictured at the top of the post here at Glorious Treats (which, of course, is where that lovely image is from). Happy Friday!

Color Friday is: Powder Pink!

10 Feb

Valentine’s Day is next Tuesday (look out for a weekend-edition V-Day Crafts post!) so naturally, the range of options for today’s Color Friday ranges from pale blush to hot pink. I went somewhere left of middle and chose Powder Pink – a light, but decidedly cheery shade of femininity (yes folks, unlike hot pink which can be made ironically masculine, this one is typically reserved for the ladies). Check it out below, and try not to hate on my liberal definition of “powder pink,” which includes some darker and lighter variations.

Clockwise from chandelier at top: Maharani Chandelier from Currey and Company, $3400 (image via Layla Grayce); Zig Zag Rug by Dwell Studio, $350 (image via DwellStudio); Pink Moroccan Leather Pouf from Serena and Lily, $450 (image via Serena and Lily); Opie Table by GlimmerglassFurniture, $485 (image via GlimmerglassFurniture); Annabelle Frames from RHBaby&Child, $34 (image via Restoration Hardware); Chair featuring Kelly Wearstler's Bengal Bazaar fabric (image via House of Honey); KokoCompany Indoor and Outdoor Optic Rug, $89 (image via KokoCompany); Pink Cover for Nook Tablet by Jonathan Adler - no longer available, $39.95 (image via Barnes and Noble)

And since this post is primarily for the ladies, I couldn’t resist including some pops of pink that are absolutely irresistible. Are they are your wish list? Maybe they are now!

Clockwise from belt: Patent Leather Skinny Bow Belt from J.Crew, $45 (image via J.Crew); Rosewood Dot Necklace from Kate Spade, $128 (image via Kate Spade); 100 Calorie Chocolate Bars from Dylan's Candy Bar, $1.50 (image via Dylan's Candy Bar); Timed Originals Camper, $50 (image via Piperlime)

Don’t you LOVE that Kate Spade necklace?  Have a great weekend!

Color Friday is: Red! (Really this time…just red.)

3 Feb

Last week Color Friday was red, too. And by “Red,” I mean that I talked about the play currently running at Arena Stage…not the color. Well this week, there are no games: Color Friday is red. Red as in strawberries and fire engines and Coke and all of the other lovely red things I’ve picked for you below. Enjoy them, and have a great weekend! I hear there’s a football game on…

Clockwise from pendant at top: Cage Fuel Pendant Lamp from CB2, $149 (image via CB2); Design Sponge at Home by Grace Bonney (image via Amazon.com); Marquis Alphabet Light - Multi from Urban Outfitters, $179 (image via Urban Outfitters); Updated Louis Chair at Wisteria, $329 (image via Wisteria); Gradiated Stripe Pouf from West Elm, $219 (image via West Elm); Thai Silk Decorative Pillow from Target, $50 (image via Target); Berry Bowl and Tray by Robert Seigel at Uncommon Goods, $65 (image via Uncommon Goods); Verlag 3 by Carol Padberg, a print via 20x200, $60 for 11'' x 14'' (image via 20x200)

…did you notice that everything but the Louis Chair was under $300 — what fashionable steals!! For the record, I think the Updated Louis Chair from Wisteria is worth all of it’s 32,900 pennies! – Gorgeous!

Color Friday is: Red! RED at Arena Stage, that is…

27 Jan

Last night I was treated to a performance of Red, the acclaimed Tony Award winning play that just opened at Arena Stage. The play is about Mark Rothko, the Russian-American, abstract expressionist painter who was active in the mid 1900s. You know: the colored squares guy.

(image via Arena Stage)

I don’t refer casually to him as “the colored squares guy” to be sinister or suggest his work is silly. In fact, I’ve come to really appreciate and enjoy many of the seemingly mundane subjects of abstract expressionism over the years. In the play, Rothko’s character discusses his paintings as being highly vulnerable objects that pulsate, glow, and he even goes so far as to suggest that they have emotions. This hour and forty minute long show has only two cast members, and focuses on the relationship between Rothko and his fictional assistant, Ken, as he works on a commission for the Four Seasons restaurant in Philip Johnson and Mies Van der Rohe’s Seagram Building; three of these paintings are on view at the National Gallery of Art right now. As the title if the play may suggest, the works are largely in red tones.

I chuckled when Rothko’s character mentioned that he rued the day that his paintings would grace living rooms as decoration, or that people would pair his thoughtful, serious color blocks with chips from the Sherwin Williams fan deck. I can’t say I recommend matching art to your throw pillows, but as a designer, I advocate some semblance of purpose or cohesion. I’m guessing he wouldn’t like these much:

(image via Design Crush)

The art history student in me was thrilled to hear the names of so many artists: the characters discuss Caravaggio, de Kooning, Matisee and others throughout, and if you are at all familar with the history of art you’ll be reminded of many favorite images (and appreciate the dialogue on a much deeper level). They talk about what red means to them, what black represents, and what white connotes. There’s back and forth between the men about different shades of red that lasts a few minutes, and the color theorist in me was thoroughly entertained. There’s a gorgeous set, wonderful lighting, and real painting action happens right on stage mid-performance. If you sit in the front row don’t wear anything you like too much (you’ve been warned).

(image via Arena Stage)

The discussion of the point of abstract expressionism — more specifically, Rothko’s work; or to generalize, art on the whole — is a central theme. Rothko, as the artist, obviously has a stake in making his work mean something important. His assistant, on the other hand, suggests that “Sometimes, you just want a f*cking still life.”

Feel free to form your own opinion sometime over the course of the next five weeks: Red is running at Arena Stage, in the Kreeger Theatre, until March 11th 2012. You can purchase tickets here.

Arena Stage provided the tickets to this performance.

Color Friday is: Matte Black!

20 Jan

Basic black is beautiful. It’s dramatic, masculine, and can be both sophisticated and playful. While I love a glossy black finish as much as the next glam aficionado, I also have a huge soft spot for matte black. The flat finish of a matte black object is easy to keep looking good (no fingerprints!) and it plays well with shine just as well as it does with rustic woven baskets. It’s also the finish of a chalkboard, which you know I love. Have a look at these matte black finds below; many of them you can craft yourself using some DIY blackboard paint (I like the one from Benjamin Moore)! Enjoy!

Clockwise from pendant at top: Noir Pendant Lamp from CB2, $249 (image via CB2); Nars Eyeshadow Compact in Nightbreed, $23 (image via Drugstore.com); Benjamin Moore's Chalkboard Paint, $18.99 (image via BenjaminMoore); Morten Table Lamp by West Elm, $149 (image via West Elm); Architect Desk from CB2, $149 (image via CB2); West Elm Storage Baskets, $39-$59 (image via West Elm); Cast Iron Skillet by Lodge, $10-$60 (image via Amazon.com); Ottavio Vase by ZGallerie, $69.99 (image via ZGallerie); Stoneware Vessel by John Ward from Moss via 1st Dibs, price on request (image via 1stDibs)

I should point out that two of these items are, to me, examples of great product design. The Nars compact is one of my favorite  “things.” The almost rubbery black case is soft but firm to the touch, and it wipes off beautifully if you get fingerprints on it. Combined with the sleek text, its matte black finish is something I love seeing every time I pull it out of my drawer. Also, the Lodge cast iron skillet is a staple in my kitchen. The perfect matte black finish becomes a little shinier and browner over time, and if you don’t already have one you’ll love using it for everything from frying chicken to sauteing peppers – I promise.

Have a great weekend!

Color Friday is: Midnight Blue!

7 Jan

Considering that I typically get my Color Friday posts up pretty early, it’s fitting that this late-in-the-day one is “Midnight” Blue. (I know that it’s late not only from the tell-tale darkness outside the window over my desk, but because there is a small voice beckoning me to “Come back! Get my milk bottle! Let’s play! Don’t be mean!” from the upstairs bedroom that is reserved for the tiniest member of our household. The joys of parenting don’t end at bedtime, you know.

So while I’m wishing that my midnight would come sooner, I’ll give you your gorgeous midnight finds right here in your handy dandy little Color Friday circle of goodness. Enjoy!

Clockwise from pendant at top: Laguna Bouquet Pendant Light in Navy/White, $1,790 (image via YLighting); Zig Zag Shimmer Navy Pillow by Oomph, $165 (image via Oomphonline); Kate Spade Idiom Bangle, $88 (image via Kate Spade); Jonathan Adler's Nixon End Table, $695; Milo Sofa from Anthropologie, $4998 (image via Anthropologie); West Elm's Stripe Favorite Throw in Navy, $38 (image via West Elm); Graham and Brown's Soprano Wallpaper, $75/roll (image via Graham and Brown); Gorgeous (name unknown) china from Richard Ginori (image via New England Home Magazine)

Have a great weekend…and enjoy the weather if it lasts!

I think my favorite Color Friday each year involves those iconic red and white stripes we can’t get enough of this time in late December. Color Friday (and Pantone’s Color of 2012) is: Tangerine Tango!

9 Dec

This time of year is a spectacular time…not just for the holidays, but because it’s the time that Pantone announces its Color of the Year! The edict is meant to forecast trends in the fashion and home arenas, and it typically has a good amount of influence on designer’s forthcoming lines. For 2012, it’s going to be Tangerine Tango: a strong, vibrant red-orange hue that’s just as warm as it is attention-getting.

I love it with pink, brown, navy, or even bright white. It’s probably actually a great match with last year’s COTY, Honeysuckle. It’s a pretty versatile shade for being so strong.

…and if you’ll allow me to digress for a second, does it make anyone else chuckle that even Pantone’s own photographs (like the one above) feature a “tangerine tango” spread with many, MANY, different shades of orange? I thought they were the color science masters, surely their graphic designers can figure out how to match the border to the photograph of their merchandise, right? Ahh well, this is very tongue-in-cheek seeing as how I’m a designer of interiors and not graphics. So let’s get back on track…

Naturally, as you may have anticipated, this week’s Color Friday is….you guessed it – Tangerine Tango! Here are my picks:

Clockwise from pillow at top: DL Rhein Zig Zag Embroidered Pillow, $90 (image via Layla Grayce); CB2's Parlour Tangerine Chair, $699 (image via CB2); Wise Ol' Owl Canister from Anthropologie, $128 (image via Anthropologie); Borromean Rings Canvas Tote from Wisteria, $29 (image via Wisteria); Izze Sparkling Grapefruit Beverage, available at grocers near you (image via Izze); Painting Abstraction by Bob Nickas, $47.25 (image via Amazon.com); Kitchen Aid Artisian Stand Mixer in Tangerine, $300 (image via Amazon.com); Tangerine Drip Glaze Ceramic and Brass Lamps (pair), Assemblage via 1st Dibs, price on request (image via 1stDibs.com); Enamel Brackets Frame by Jonathan Adler, $68 (image via Jonathan Adler)

Have a great weekend — tangerines *are* in season right now!

Color Friday is: Goldenrod!

2 Dec

Yellow is tough. Too cool, and it’s often sickly looking. Too warm, and it’s more brown and muddy than you wanted it to be. Gold is the sweet spot, and I don’t mean gold-gold; what I mean is that perfect shade of yellow that’s warm and desaturated just a bit, but still bright and happy. Let’s call it “goldenrod,” shall we?

Here are my Goldenrod picks for the week. Enjoy, and have a great weekend!

Color Friday is: Magenta!

11 Nov

I just realized that for the past few weeks I’ve been focusing on colors that aren’t the most vibrant of the bunch, so this week my plan is to switch things up. The first color that comes to mind when I think of excitement and flair and punch is magenta: it doesn’t get much more obviously colorful than bright pink! I love magenta for its hint of purple, which is arguably more sophisticated than bubblegum, and I also adore the way that it pairs well with browns, navy, orange, and most neutrals. Here are my top picks for Magenta finds this week. Hope you enjoy a break from the browns and oranges of the season!
